The Most Underrated Rice Cooker Feature

Grainy has a tip!

Most people buy a rice cooker to cook rice. Fair enough. But steaming is the hidden superpower that turns your rice cooker from a single-purpose appliance into a complete meal machine.

Nearly every rice cooker comes with a steaming basket or tray. Most people never use it. That changes today.

Steaming Basics

How it works: Water goes in the bottom, food sits in the basket above, and steam from the boiling water cooks your food gently and evenly. It’s the healthiest cooking method — no oil, no charring, nutrients preserved.

Two approaches:

  1. Steam only: Fill water to the minimum line, place food in basket, use steam/cook setting
  2. Simultaneous cook: Place rice + water in pot, steaming basket on top, cook rice and steam food together

Complete Meal: Rice + Steam Simultaneously

The most efficient rice cooker hack: cook rice at the bottom, steam protein/veggies on top. One button. One pot. Complete meal in 20-30 minutes.

Example: Salmon Rice Bowl

  1. Rinse 2 cups jasmine rice, add to pot with 2 cups water
  2. Season a salmon fillet with soy sauce, ginger, and sesame oil
  3. Place steaming basket on top with the salmon
  4. Press cook — rice and salmon finish at the same time
  5. Serve over rice with steamed vegetables

Example: Chicken & Veggie Rice

  1. 2 cups rice + 2 cups water in pot
  2. Thinly sliced chicken breast (marinated) — in the steaming basket
  3. Broccoli and carrots alongside the chicken
  4. Cook — chicken juices drip into the rice for extra flavor

Grainy says: “The Tiger JBV’s tacook plate is specifically designed for synchro-cooking complete meals. It’s the best budget option for steam + rice simultaneously.” 🍙

Tips for Better Steaming

  1. Don’t overcrowd. Leave space between items for steam circulation
  2. Cut uniformly. Same-size pieces cook evenly
  3. Season before steaming. Marinades and seasonings infuse better with steam heat
  4. Use parchment paper under fish to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier
  5. Add aromatics to the water. Lemon slices, ginger, or garlic in the cooking water add subtle flavor

Safety Tips for Rice Cooker Steaming ⚠️

Steaming is low-risk, but a few precautions make it safer:

  • Never open the lid during steaming. The burst of steam can cause burns — always use oven mitts and tilt the lid away from you when checking.
  • Don’t overfill the water. Less water is better for steaming. Overfilling causes boiling water to splash onto food and produces soggy results. Fill to the minimum line or 1-2 cups max for steaming only.
  • Check the basket fit. Make sure the steaming basket sits securely — a shifting basket can dump food into boiling water.
  • Don’t steam from frozen. Thaw proteins before steaming for even cooking. Frozen items release too much water and dilute the steam.

What NOT to Steam in a Rice Cooker

Some foods don’t work well with rice cooker steaming:

  • Red meat or thick cuts — takes too long and doesn’t develop flavor without browning
  • Bread or baked goods — steam makes them soggy
  • Large whole chicken pieces — won’t cook through evenly in the basket size
  • Leafy greens — cook too fast and become slimy; better sautéed

Cleaning After Steaming

Steaming leaves mineral deposits and food residue in the basket and on the inner lid. After each steaming session:

  1. Rinse the basket immediately — dried fish or dumpling residue is much harder to clean
  2. Wipe the inner lid — steam condensation carries food particles upward
  3. Drain and wipe the pot — if steaming without rice, empty residual water completely
  4. Soak if needed — stubborn residue loosens with 10 minutes in warm soapy water
