Best Rice Cookers for Basmati and Long-Grain Rice
Basmati and jasmine rice need different handling than short-grain varieties. Here are the cookers that nail long-grain texture every time.
This desk does not run a product test fleet. What follows is manufacturer menus, live listings, and owner-consensus research — not a biryani diary and not a rewrite of Aroma’s “all varieties” banner.
Most Japanese Micoms are tuned for short-grain. You can still cook basmati in them. You cannot treat the printed White line as a basmati law. Grain chemistry: long grain vs short grain and jasmine vs basmati.
What actually changes for basmati
- More amylose, less stick. You want separate grains. Extra water that would plump koshihikari turns basmati into porridge.
- Elongation needs space and a soak, not a hotter plate.
- Japanese water lines are the wrong default. Use the included 180 ml cup for the rice, then put water below the White mark and adjust by brand. Ratio guide.
- A named long-grain menu is rare. Do not invent one on a cooker that only says White / Brown / Quick.
Jasmine is long-grain and slightly stickier. It is not a substitute setting for aged basmati. Jasmine-specific roundup: best rice cooker for jasmine.
The keepers, with menus this desk actually checked
Named long-grain compact — Zojirushi NS-LGC05
Zojirushi’s NS-LGC05 page lists a long grain white rice menu on a 3-cup / 0.54 L Micom, plus steel-cut oatmeal, GABA brown, sushi, brown, and quick. Triple heater. Retractable cord. Made in China at a Zojirushi factory — say that out loud if “Made in Japan” was the whole reason you opened a Zojirushi tab (that is the NS-ZCC10).
Confirm the live listing; search NS-LGC05 on Amazon. The jasmine-leaning 3-cup twin is the NS-LHC05 (ASIN B01EVHWNQQ) — different menu, same size class.
Buy the LGC05 if the pot must be 3 cups and long-grain is the daily grain. Skip it if you cook family biryani — that is a 10-cup uncooked pot.
Neuro Fuzzy daily driver — Zojirushi NS-ZCC10
ASIN B00007J5U7. Zojirushi’s NS-ZCC page does not name a long-grain key. You get white regular/sushi / softer / harder, mixed, brown, rinse-free, quick. Basmati works when you under-fill the White line and fluff with a fork. Softer is usually the wrong white-rice key for basmati.

Family digital + sauté — Aroma ARC-5000SB
ASIN B01N8RAZB1. Aroma Professional Plus: 10 cups uncooked / 20 cups cooked. Manual menus this desk will name: White, Brown, Sushi, Quick Rice, Quinoa, Steam, Slow Cook, Sauté-then-Simmer (STS). STS is the buying note for jeera rice and pulao — toast ghee and spice, then add rinsed rice and water in the same pot. It is not fuzzy logic and it is not a Long Grain button.
A leftover draft also blurred this with the ARC-150SB (same 20-cup cooked class, different model number). Match the stamp on the listing.
Indian-menu context: best rice cooker for Indian cooking. Huge-batch digital, not Aroma: Hamilton Beach 37518.
Affordable Micom — Cuckoo CR-0655F
ASIN B01MQWFGKG. Cuckoo America: 6 cups uncooked, type Micom, preset timer, turbo, GABA/brown, auto-clean. No long-grain key. No pressure. Reduce water on White; Turbo is for speed, not for aged basmati elongation.
Do not hang a diamond-coating story on this pot — Cuckoo America specifies nonstick. Full write-up: CR-0655F review.
Mid-price Japanese Micom + a side — Tiger JBV-A10U
ASIN B00KDNKTJG. 5.5-cup Micom. The Tacook plate can steam a protein while long-grain cooks below. Still use less water than the short-grain line. Tiger JBV review.
Technique that matters more than the logo
- Rinse until the water is mostly clear. Basmati surface starch clumps.
- Soak 20–30 minutes if you want maximum length — then subtract water.
- Stay under the Japanese White line until your bag of rice is dialed.
- Rest 10 minutes on keep-warm, lid closed, then fluff with a fork, not a paddle smash.
- A teaspoon of ghee or oil is cook technique, not a firmware feature.
If the pot is mushy, cut water. If it is hard in the center, you under-soaked or used Quick on a cooker that skips the soak. Should you soak rice?.
Who should buy which
| You cook… | This desk’s pick | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| Daily basmati, 1–2 people | NS-LGC05 (named long-grain) or NS-LHC05 | A 20-cup Aroma on a tiny counter |
| Daily mixed grains + sushi some nights | NS-ZCC10 with a lower water line | Treating Softer as a basmati key |
| Family pulao / biryani batches | ARC-5000SB for STS + 10-cup uncooked | A 3-cup Zojirushi you run four times |
| Micom on a budget | CR-0655F | Inventing a Long Grain preset |
| One-pot rice + steamed side | Tiger JBV-A10U | A Tatung unless you want steel-and-steam, not Micom |

Final verdict
Editorial read: buy a cooker that either names long-grain (NS-LGC05) or gives you a Micom you can under-water (NS-ZCC10, CR-0655F, JBV). Buy the ARC-5000SB for capacity and sauté, not because a leftover draft invented a Long Grain key. Confirm the model stamp — 20-cup Aromas are not interchangeable with 3-cup Zojirushis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you cook basmati rice in a Japanese rice cooker?
Yes. Japanese pot lines are drawn for short-grain. For basmati, start below the White line, rinse well, and optionally soak. Zojirushi's NS-LGC05 is the compact model that actually names a long-grain white menu. The NS-ZCC10 does not.
Should I soak basmati rice before putting it in a rice cooker?
A 20–30 minute soak is standard basmati technique for elongation. Some Micoms already soak on White. If you pre-soak, use less pot water so you do not double-soak into mush. This desk does not publish one magic ratio for every brand of aged basmati.
Does the Aroma ARC-5000SB have a Long Grain button?
A leftover draft said yes. Aroma's ARC-5000SB manual lists White, Brown, Sushi, Quick Rice, Quinoa, Steam, Slow Cook, and Sauté-then-Simmer — not a dedicated Long Grain key. The long-grain claim is 'calibrated for all varieties,' which is marketing, not a menu name.
